The 10 Best Movies of 2016

First and foremost, happy New Year everyone! This past year was a great one for horror movies, in particular, as many became box office hits and were actually good flicks. The proof is in that there are a couple of them that made my list. Comic book and geek flicks were big, too, but as you'll see it's Marvel and Star Wars that still rule this list, sorry DC fans. As always I remind you that my movie list is not like any other top 10 movie list out there.

Honorable Mentions:
I Am Your Father
Finding Dory
The Conjuring 2
Zootopia
Scherzo Diabolico

10. The Shallows- It's been ages since someone has made a good killer shark horror flick. With movies like Sharknado making them look silly and aiming for laughs, it was about time that terror came back to the seas. This nail-biting yet simple flick is one of the most thoroughly enjoyable horror movies of the year. It's suspenseful and builds to truly exhilarating and exciting climax. The gorgeous Blake Lively (who both was inducted into this site's Horror Crushes and earned the silver medal in the The 70 Hottest Babes of 2016) might be the year's best final girl of the year. She pulled out the best performance of her career and the bonus of her little feathered friend Steven Seagull made for the duo you most wanted to cheer on and feared for the safety of this entire year. And, bonus points for making a PG-13 movie that pushed the rating the hardest that it has been pushed in decades.

9. Sausage Party- Holy shit was this movie ever funny! I actually cried from laughing so hard. Setting out to be the adult Pixar flick, it most certainly succeeds at it. Very politically incorrect and over the top, it pulls no punches in its humor. Drug use, a douche being a douche, a lesbian taco, living food dismemberment, references to religion, and more, this one has it all. Truly one of the best adult animated movies, ever.

8. 10 Cloverfield Lane- Semi-sequel to one of the best found footage horror movies ever, Cloverfield, this expertly acted flick will have you clenching on to your seat handles. Your heart will race as the tension builds and builds till it hits the exciting climax. John Goodman is one of the most scary villains of the year, while the beautiful Mary Elizabeth Winstead is great and very likable as the film's protagonist. They play so well against each other and really help solidify this as an early horror hit.

7. The Nice Guys- This mix of neo-noir, comedy, and action is one of the finest films that you probably didn't see this year. And, if you did then you know what I am talking about. The acting from Ryan Golsing and Russell Crowe is excellent and the script by Anthony Bagarozzi and director Shane Black is one of my favorites of the year. It's filled with witty and funny dialogue and great plots twists and turns. The 70s setting is just plain fucking awesome. In all, this is one is even better than Shane Black's own Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

6. Green Room- A violent and intense as fucking hell horror thriller, has a punk band trapped in a neo-nazi club. Great acting from everyone, especially Patrick Stewart who as the leader of the neo-nazi gang who gives one of his best performances ever, as a fucking villain! Dude is just intimidating and pure fucking evil. The violence comes hard and graphic and the climax is one of the most intense of the year. It all gets rounded off by some great music and music references, to make this a punk-horror/ thriller masterpiece!

5. The Secret Life of Pets- As a pet/ dog owner and lover, this one was one my most anticipated films of the year. And, I am glad that it more than delivered. It's one of the most fun and the most hilarious movie of the year. The script is witty and if you have pets you will really appreciate the humor. Even if you don't, you will still have a blast with it. Then there the characters, who are all, from main to supporting, memorable. Sure it bites off of Pixar's Toy Story, but who gives a fuck when it is done this good. And, while I won't say it's a better movie than that classic (it ain't), I like it more.

4. Don't Breathe- In a year filled with great horror movies, this one is the best one. Full review: http://themastergio.blogspot.com/2016/08/dont-breather-review.html

3. Captain America: Civil War- This one is more an Avengers movie, than an actual Captain America flick. But, it doesn't really matter. What does is  the solid script, exhilarating action scenes, and solid acting from the cast. Despite the huge cast of characters, it never feels like it is has too much going or bloated, unlike many other similar comic-book flicks. It also gives us such cool moments that characters like the Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man/ Giant-Man, the Black Panther, and Spider-Man really shine. And, speaking of Spidey, THIS was the Spidey we all wanted and needed. I CAN'T wait for this year's Spider-man: Homecoming! Also worth mentioning is how the Captain America movies keep getting better and better as the franchise moves forward. In all, the third best Marvel Studios flick.

2. Deadpool- The best R-rated superhero movie ever, is also one of the best in the superhero movie genre, ever, regardless of rating! Funny, action-packed, and filled with ultra-violence, this is the Deadpool movie we all wanted and demanded. The script and its dialogue are utterly priceless and will be quoted forever by comic-book fans. And, make no bones about it, Ryan Reyonlds IS Deadpool!! I adore this movie, enough so that I saw it twice in the movies, that's something I almost never do. This one would've been number one, where it for the next and final flick on the list...

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story- The first stand alone Star Wars is the finest entry in the franchise since The Empire Strikes Back. Very dark but also thrilling, this finally puts the WAR in Star Wars. Up and until this point, we have never seen a film like this in the series. It felt fresh and mature. While, I liked The Force Awakens, a lot, it rehashed too many ideas. This one didn't. It also had great characters both good and evil (all portrayed excellently by the awesome cast). CGI Tarkin (played in A New Hope by late, great horror actor Peter Cushing) was fucking awesome. Also awesome were all the other winks and nods through in for the fans. Oh and then, there is Darth Vader!! He was badass!! And, the action scenes were killer! Oh, how can I forget how beautiful Felicity Jones is! And... wait let me stop, I sound like a raving fanboy, you get the point. Best film of the year!

Cosplay of WinterCon 2016

This past Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, as press, I got to attend WinterCon for my first time ever. The convention, which I was blown away by, was held at the very awesome Resorts World Casino in Queens, NY. WinterCon was big and a lot of fun, and I am not lying when I say that it was one of my favorite cons that I went to this year! The guests were awesome, the deals on swag great, and lots of cool cosplayers were onhand. I got lots of great pictures and some truly amazing interviews. Those are currently being worked on, but when you see who I interviewed, your minds will be blown away!

For this first write-up on it, I figured I would share with you some of my favorite cosplays that I saw that day.

This cosplayer below had a kick ass female Predator! What's really cool is the fact that she wore a masked and did make-up! I had to get and post pics of both of these looks. She just looks amazing and totally badass!

This is my friend Salem as Deadpool (below). He recognized me, as I couldn't tell who it was with him being in full cosplay gear. He asked me where my Punisher cosplay was. I had considered it, but in the long run opted out. Punisher will be back next year. I promise! Anyways, my friend looks fucking cool, as hell, doesn't he?
Daphne holds up a Scooby Snack, which they all seem to want.
But, then Robin, having learned from the Joker, steals the snack for himself! What a vile, awful villian he has become!
Remember that awesome episode of Spongebob Squarepants where he finds a pencil? And, then whatever he draws comes to life? And, when he draws himself, a little evil version of himself pops up and cause mayhem? Well this cosplayer, below, did an awesome cosplay of just that!

OK, I want to see this fight in a Marvel movie. I know it won't happen cause, they tend to keep the movies and Netflix shows separate. But, a geek can dream right?
Oh dear God, this girl did an AWESOME Black Canary cosplay. Her pose kicked ass! And, she ranks among the most beautiful Black Canary cosplayers that I have ever seen!

That's it for now. I have a tons more to post from this convention. So be sure to stayed tuned!

The 70 Hottest Babes of 2016, pt. 2: 60-51

60. Felicity Jones (new)- I am crushing hard on Felicity Jones and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hasn't even come out yet! But, she just looks awesome and, of course, hot(!) in all the trailers and promos for the highly anticipated movie. Of course, it would be hard not to fall in love with her, what with THAT accent(!!), those lips, and those beautiful eyes of her!

59. Katie Cassidy (last year #62)- OK, I am gonna flat out say this, I miss Katie Cassidy's Black Canary on Arrow. Sure I had my many issues with the way the character was written, but it's Katie freaking Cassidy! Also, the fact that Felicity is still alive sucks ass. As one of my friends said, "the wrong blonde died!" Still, her return for the 100th episode of the show last week was very, very welcomed!

58. Daniel Panabaker (last year #48)- The fact that Panabaker got her Killer Frost powers in this season of The Flash is hot. Seeing her play bad is just too fucking smoldering, which is kind of ironic, actually. She didn't go all the way with her evil transformation, though (not that I expected her to), and she didn't don the sexy costume this season. That last part is kind of heartbreaking, actually!

57. Eiza Gonzalez (new)- As Satanico Pandemonium, the gorgeous Ms. Gonzalez has me in awe of her every time I see her on From Dusk Till Dawn. With this being the show's best season yet, it really bought home just how fucking hot she is. And, she is even hotter when she is kicking ass and/ or covered in blood!

56. Asa Akira (last year #9)- Asa remains the adult industry's most popular Asian babe, and of its most popular period, and with good reason. Aside, from all the great porn flicks that she shot for Wicked, she also put her second book, this year: Dirty Thirty: A Memoir.

55. Natalie Dormer (last year #18)- Getting back to deaths on TV shows that fucking sucked this year Dormer's character of Margery dying was not cool. To its advantage the whole episode was awesome and jaw dropping. So while, she will be missed (she was, after all, the hottest babe in a show FULL of babes!), it was a great episode in a phenomenal season. Also, this year, she appeared in the horror flick, The Forest. And, while, it's great to see her in a horror flick, I didn't see said movie. But, reviews for it were less than stellar...

54. Emily VanCamp (new)- VanCamp plays Sharon Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This year in the incredible Captain America: Civil War, she locked lips with the lucky Captain, himself. I wish we got to see her kick a little more ass in the movie, but she looked good, regardless. Hell, they even made a Pop figure of her! I crushed on her so hard, that that was the first Pop from the Civil War set that I bought!

53. Emma Anzai (last year ranked 2014 #51)- I had the pleasure of seeing Sick Puppies live for my second time in my life earlier this year. The band have a new signer and released a new album, Fury, which is great! Anzai, as always, is one of hard rock's best bass players, and absolutely gorgeous, as well! She is impossible to take one's eyes off of!

52. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (new)- 10 Cloverfield Lane is one of the year's finest and most nail biting horror movies. The absolutely stunning Ms. Winstead, along her costar with John Goodman, gave one of the best performances in the entire genre this year. While, she has done quite a few horror flicks, this is, up to now in her career, her finest genre work.

51. Debbie Rochon (last year ranked 2014 same)- The hardest working woman in horror returns to this list after a two year absence, in the same spot no less, thanks to her directorial debut Model Hunger. I was so happy to see her for a signing for the DVD at Forbidden Planet in NYC (which ended up being a very popular post in my site). As well as seeing and reviewing the movie itself, which is great! Debbie is, of course, as stunning, as ever!

I AM YOUR FATHER (Review)

Title: I Am Your Father
Writers/ Directors:  Toni Bestard, Marcos Cabotá
Cast: David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Jeremy Bulloch, Ben Burtt, Marcos
Cabotá, Lou Ferringo     Year: 2015
Min: 83

David Prowse is the actor who played one of the greatest villains in cinema history: Darth Vader, in the original Star Wars trilogy. He is now 80 years old and has been, for many years, completely forgotten/ ignored by Lucasfilm, despite his iconic role. Two Spanish filmmakers try to discover what lead to this behavior by Lucas and company and attempt to pay loving tribute to the actor. They also decide to this by giving him the chance to do the one thing Prowse never could or was allowed to do, play the scene in Return of the Jedi where the redeemed Vader removes his mask and shows his face (in the actual movie actor Sebastian Shaw played him for this pivotal scene).
I Am Your Father is an excellent documentary about an actor that seemingly has gotten shafted by Lucasfilm and might be forgotten by some. But, he shouldn't be. True Star Wars fans know this. And, this docu solidifies and reminds us why. It consists of interviews with people who worked behind the camera on the Star Wars films, and actors and friends, who know and or worked with Prowse. Shit, even James Earl Jones, who gave Vader's voice chimes in. It is fascinating to find out what lead to George Lucas/ Lucasfilm and their ultimate ignoring of Prowse and whether it is warranted or not. And, of course, there is lots of interviewing of Prowse. He comes off as very sweet and despite the animosity shown by Lucasfilm, his great love of the Vader and Star Wars endures.
I love that there is a Hammer Films poster behind him.

The interviews are honest and captivating as is the structure of documentary. It moves swiftly and is clearly done by a duo who love Star Wars, Vader, and Prowse. Their decision to shoot the unmasking Return scene is, in of itself, is proof of it. By the last 15 minutes or so, I was so moved, tears ran down my face.
There are no Star Wars clips, but I didn't expect there to be. However, being a HUGE horror fan (with a true love of Hammer Films) on top of being a HUGE Star Wars I loved that they showed clips of his Hammer monster roles (like his excellent portrayal of the monster in Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell). They also show his crossing the street commercials which reportedly saved thousands of lives in England. Getting back to the horror connection, it is also awesome that while the credits role, we are shown pictures of horror/ monster actors like Boris "Frankenstein's Monster" Karloff, Lon "The Phantom of the Opera" Chaney, Robert "Freddy Kreuger" Englund, Doug "Pinhead" Bradley, etc, and Prowse is shown among them. It's a truly perfect way to end the proceedings.
This is the second of two must see documentaries concerning Star Wars released this year. The other being Elstree 1976. Both are must sees (and both are on Netflix, right now), and both feature Prowse. It's actually on that one that I first heard about the heat that Lucas holds for Prowse. But, this one is the better of the two. In fact, this is the finest documentary on Star Wars since The People Vs. George Lucas.
I Am Your Father is entertaining, honest, loving, and moving. I cannot say enough good things about it. I had the pleasure of meeting David Prowse at a Fangoria Weekend of Horrors many years ago, but I knew about him ever since I was a little kid. Darth Vader is my favorite character in the Star Wars franchise, a film franchise I so very deeply love. Any and all Star Wars fans must see this docu, especially since, as I mentioned earlier, is on Netflix currently. Highest possible recommendation.

NYCC 2016- Thurs & Sat: Bonus Edition!

I have so many pics and reporting to do from my time at NYCC, that I needed to do this first ever bonus edition. I don't want you guys to miss anything!

Let's begin with a couple from Thurs:

I did get to hit the Troma booth on that very day. I finally got around to picking up The Toxic Avenger, a classic that I had not owned nor revisited since I owned it on freaking VHS in college! God, that is a lifetime ago! Anwyays, having just rewatched it last week, I can say that it holds up excellently and still fucking rules! Back to NYCC where I talked to Toxie, himself, for a while. What a nice guy he is, taking time off from fighting crime in Tromaville, New Jersey to meet his loving fans!
Lloyd Kaufman, who signed my Blu-ray (left), joked around telling my friend Alan to assure and cradle me, as the Toxic Avenger is not a real character! Wait what?! No way! Uncle Lloyd, you have broken my heart with this knowledge! Next thing I know someone will tell me that the Great Pumpkin isn't real, either!

Towards the end of the day, I passed by the IFC booth (having earlier in the day bought Road Games, which had me at Barbara Crampton! You can see it to the right along with the other swag that I bought on that day). They had an amazing and actual cadaver prop from the upcoming horror flick (Dec. 21, 2016, to be exact) The Autopsy of Jane Doe.
 Grabbing some internal organs!
Speaking in Yoda (hey, I am wearing a Funko Pop Star Wars tee, after all) voice, "Shocked, I am!"
On to Sat:
I did not just take pics with cosplayers, but also took pics of a couple of them just by themselves. Here are some of my favorites, of those:
OK, this Mystique midway through her changing is one of the coolest ideas ever. I love it!
Awesome, Cesrei from Game of Thrones! The glowing liquid she carried with her was an awesome bonus!

Awesome Game of Thrones group cosplay!
Battlestar Galactica! This is fucking kick ass! I love Number Six!
Go Team Rocket! Catch yourselves some Pokemon!
Metal Star Wars!! This ruled so much as it combined two of my favorite things in life! By the way, you can see some video of this in my interview with Aurora O'Brien here: http://themastergio.blogspot.com/2016/10/video-truly-awesome-and-beautiful.html

Here are some extra pics of me in my Punisher cosplay:
