BLACK CHRISTMAS (2006) (Review)

Title: Black Christmas (Black Xmas)

Writer/ Director:  Glen Morgan
Cast: Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Lacey Chabert, Kristen Cloke
Year: 2006
Min: 84

Several years ago a disturbed young man named Billy killed his mom and her lover, and gouged one of the eyes of his daughter (whose mother is his own mom, via an incestuous moment of sexual abuse on her part). He gets locked up in an insane asylum. But, on Christmas Eve he escapes and heads back to his old home, where a sorority now live. A small group of the girls are celebrating the holidays there and soon, one by one, they are killed by Billy.
A remake of the original Bob Clark (who also made A Christmas Story!) classic flick from 1974, this nasty little slasher is far better than perhaps you may have been lead to believe. When the movie first came out it had a ton of hate from fans of the original, as well as spawning controversy thanks to a group of close minded buffoons who felt that the movie somehow hurt the "sanctity" of Christmas or some lame shit like that. The former I can understand, but I'll debate here why I think they are wrong. The later is just bullshit.
To it's advantage Black Christmas has, thankfully, slowly gained a cult following over the years, as more horror fans have watched it and given its due chance. Those who have yet to see it are really doing themselves (and the movie and its cast and crew) a disservice. Even those who only watched it once and hated it, should give it a new look, with more open eyes.
First and foremost, no this movie is not on the level of the Clark classic, but then not many remakes are on the level of the movie that inspired it. And, in the case of the original Black Christmas, it is one of the most important and influential slasher flicks ever. It is amazing to think that it precedes both Halloween and Friday the 13th (and even When a Stranger Calls, another horror film that is "inspired" by it). So clearly this movie had an uphill battle from the get go. But, here is the thing, it knew it did, and as all good remakes should, it went down its own path.
A major difference is the identity of Billy, in the original he is a mystery. But not here, the remake is not interested in keeping him a secret. He is given a decidedly sleazy backstory, one filled with the aforementioned incest abuse and cannibalism, with a touch of very black humor. It helps to add a good sense of shock and a welcome fucked up quality to the movie.
The movie has some great gore, unlike the restrained original film. Going in this route makes sense in setting itself and in upping the stakes. It also just adds to the fun of it all. There is lots of eyeball violence, as well as splashing and splattering blood, stabbings, impalings, a head gets sliced open, and more. All of the gore FX are excellently handled by Chris Divett. They are sure to please splatter fans watching this flick.
The mostly female cast is quite good, as well as stunningly beautiful. In fact, I think this movie has one of the most babetastic casts I have ever seen in an American horror movie. Most the girls play likeable characters, with a couple really standing out with some really great lines in their dialogue. Michelle (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Trachtenberg and Crystal (of Final Destination 3 here playing a lush and being a blast in her role) are two who deliver some of those great lines. It should also be noted, cause in a slasher movie it is very important, the goregous Ms. Lowe does get nude in a welcome shower scene. Katie Cassidy is quite good in what is actually my favorite movie role of hers. As you can see from those babes the hottie factor is super high, and they are joined by Mary Elizabeth (Cloverfield Lane) Winstead, Lacy (Lost in Space) Chabert, MILFy Kristen (Final Destination) Cloake and more.
But, it's not just the ladies that look good. The movie has a beautiful look to it. Director Glen Morgan really uses the holiday colors of red and green to add a wonderful Argentoesque beauty to it. He also keeps the pacing and movie moving briskly. This keeps the movie fun and helps to make it a great time to be had.
Admit ably the movie like, any slasher, falls under certain cliches. yet, it still manages to avoid one or two and adds a twist here and there. It does come off as a bit empty headed. But, I don't think anyone watching a movie like this looking for a thought provoking piece. They just want a fast and fun movie, and this movie delivers that in a high dosage.
Perhaps the most head scrathingly odd thing about this is that the trailer (which you'll see at the bottom of this review) shows a bunch of stuff not in the movie. From what I heard scenes were shot specifically and only for the trailer. This is a pretty stupid idea that surely pissed some people off. I know, I was a little disappointed to not see them (like the spinning lights/ blades scene) in the movie. You are well advised to not expect everything in the trailer to be in the movie.
Underrated and sometimes unjustly lumped in with bad remakes, Black Christmas deserves another look. It's great that it has been gaining a following over the years, but I still feel it needs more of it. The movie is gory, fun, fast paced, good looking, both in terms of the actual movie and its stunning female cast. it's aged quite well, and has become a yearly holiday tradition of mine. When judged as its own movie, this holiday horror flick ranks as a nasty and great Yuletide time to be had.

Dead Conspiracy- Dead Conspiracy (Album Review)

Musician: Dead Conspiracy
Album Title: Dead Conspiracy
Genre/ Subgenre: Death metal/ Thrash
Label: Self-released
Release Date: Nov. 15, 2016

Dead Conspiracy is Portland's first ever death metal band. This self titled album is their first full length release. It features chainsaw guitars and blindly fast sounds that dominate this awesome slice of old-school death metal with thrash elements.

The band excel at fast as fuck music. And, this evident from the very first track, the blistering "Blood Is Everywhere". Vocally there is an almost hardcore/ thrash crossover style married with cookie monster vocals for a particularly vicious delivery that is accompanied by chainsaw guitar riffs that would make Leatherface proud. The saw like shredding guitar is even more prominent in the next track: "In the Wake of the Butcher". Here the vocals sound particularly brutal and angry. A haunting and beautiful intro builds and builds into utter pummeling brutality for "Anthietam- Vulture Feeding". The clear vocals allow this tale of of ancient and bloody battle a more fun and catchy feel to it. The super fast "Paralyzed with Fear" closes off the album quite supremely well.

The band has a clear love for old school death metal. Their fondness for gore and death filled lyrics is happily representative of this. I mean just read the titles I mentioned before if you are need proof of this! Fans of bands like Death, Massacre, and Gruesome should take special note. But, I also like the thrash metal tendencies that lurk in their music too, as the influence of German thrashers like Kreator and Sodom are also present.

Old school, fast, and heavy this self titled album from Dead Conspiracy is truly kick ass! Rounded off by solid musician and a fun and changing vocal style it further satisfies. If your looking for gore and violence filled death metal to fill that 90s void, this is the band for you!

The Pretty Reckless- Terminal 5, NYC 11/16/16

It had been way too long since I last saw The Pretty Reckless, 2012 to be exact. And, for one of my personal favorite bands, that is way too fucking long. You see I missed them on their last tour, and I wouldn't make that same mistake. Touring in support of their phenomenal new album Who You Selling For, they played last night at Terminal 5 in their, and mine, hometown of New York City.

The first opening act was hard rock band Them Evils from the OC. These guys are really good and should please fans of old school rock and metal. They have a very clear influence of bands like AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, and Ratt. Their music was hard and rocking and aside from their own songs, they played two cover track: AC/DC "It's a Long Way to the Top" and Motorhead "Ace of Spades".

Up next were the Holy White Hounds. They have a very interesting mix of 80s and 90s rock influences. The band is extremely talented and play their brand of music with much technicality. And, their music just happens to be catchy as fuck!

And, then it came time for the headliners, The Pretty Reckless!! The audience was on the edge of excitement, ready to jump at even the slightest hint that the band would get onstage. And, when they did we were ready to embrace them with all of our fandom and love!
The beautiful and uber-talented Taylor Momsen first hit the stage wearing a leather trench-coat and looking badass in it. It wouldn't take long for her to strip down to tank-top. Either way she is a breathtaking beauty!

She just exudes an air of sexiness that few can ever hope to touch. The day before the band had to cancel their show in Boston, as she wasn't feeling well. Those of us who had seen that announcement on social media were worried she may do the same here, but she didn't. And, if she wasn't feeling well, you sure as hell couldn't tell from the amazing performance she and the guys had last night. They fucking tore the house down!
They played songs from all three of their albums and opened the show with the ass-kicker "Follow Me Down". Other songs they played from the first two albums include the hits that are "Since Your Gone", "Make Me Wanna Die", and "Sweet Things". She was especially sexy on the later song slinking and moving provocatively onstage. For those curious, she sang all the parts of that song, herself (as fans know, on the album, a dude duets with her).

OK, I fucking LOVE that Punisher sticker on Taylor's guitar!!!

We were all "Going to Hell"!

Off of the new album they played the kick songs that are "Oh My God", "Hangman", "Prisoner", "Living in the Storm", and the first single off the album, the bluesy and truly badass "Take Me Down", which might be the single catchiest song made to video this year. That was the last song they played, until they came back to play their encore: "Fucked Up World". That song had a drum solo, where the rest of the band left and then they came back to finish the song and close off a killer night of GREAT hard rock music!

You guys definitely need to catch TPR on this tour! They are a phenomenal live band who play fucking awesome rock. We love you Taylor Momsen. And, The Pretty Reckless motherfucking rule!

I AM YOUR FATHER (Review)

Title: I Am Your Father
Writers/ Directors:  Toni Bestard, Marcos Cabotá
Cast: David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Jeremy Bulloch, Ben Burtt, Marcos
Cabotá, Lou Ferringo     Year: 2015
Min: 83

David Prowse is the actor who played one of the greatest villains in cinema history: Darth Vader, in the original Star Wars trilogy. He is now 80 years old and has been, for many years, completely forgotten/ ignored by Lucasfilm, despite his iconic role. Two Spanish filmmakers try to discover what lead to this behavior by Lucas and company and attempt to pay loving tribute to the actor. They also decide to this by giving him the chance to do the one thing Prowse never could or was allowed to do, play the scene in Return of the Jedi where the redeemed Vader removes his mask and shows his face (in the actual movie actor Sebastian Shaw played him for this pivotal scene).
I Am Your Father is an excellent documentary about an actor that seemingly has gotten shafted by Lucasfilm and might be forgotten by some. But, he shouldn't be. True Star Wars fans know this. And, this docu solidifies and reminds us why. It consists of interviews with people who worked behind the camera on the Star Wars films, and actors and friends, who know and or worked with Prowse. Shit, even James Earl Jones, who gave Vader's voice chimes in. It is fascinating to find out what lead to George Lucas/ Lucasfilm and their ultimate ignoring of Prowse and whether it is warranted or not. And, of course, there is lots of interviewing of Prowse. He comes off as very sweet and despite the animosity shown by Lucasfilm, his great love of the Vader and Star Wars endures.
I love that there is a Hammer Films poster behind him.

The interviews are honest and captivating as is the structure of documentary. It moves swiftly and is clearly done by a duo who love Star Wars, Vader, and Prowse. Their decision to shoot the unmasking Return scene is, in of itself, is proof of it. By the last 15 minutes or so, I was so moved, tears ran down my face.
There are no Star Wars clips, but I didn't expect there to be. However, being a HUGE horror fan (with a true love of Hammer Films) on top of being a HUGE Star Wars I loved that they showed clips of his Hammer monster roles (like his excellent portrayal of the monster in Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell). They also show his crossing the street commercials which reportedly saved thousands of lives in England. Getting back to the horror connection, it is also awesome that while the credits role, we are shown pictures of horror/ monster actors like Boris "Frankenstein's Monster" Karloff, Lon "The Phantom of the Opera" Chaney, Robert "Freddy Kreuger" Englund, Doug "Pinhead" Bradley, etc, and Prowse is shown among them. It's a truly perfect way to end the proceedings.
This is the second of two must see documentaries concerning Star Wars released this year. The other being Elstree 1976. Both are must sees (and both are on Netflix, right now), and both feature Prowse. It's actually on that one that I first heard about the heat that Lucas holds for Prowse. But, this one is the better of the two. In fact, this is the finest documentary on Star Wars since The People Vs. George Lucas.
I Am Your Father is entertaining, honest, loving, and moving. I cannot say enough good things about it. I had the pleasure of meeting David Prowse at a Fangoria Weekend of Horrors many years ago, but I knew about him ever since I was a little kid. Darth Vader is my favorite character in the Star Wars franchise, a film franchise I so very deeply love. Any and all Star Wars fans must see this docu, especially since, as I mentioned earlier, is on Netflix currently. Highest possible recommendation.
